Regardless of your profession or the industry in which you work, you should never overlook the fact that you could suffer an on the job injury at some point.

There are many causes of workplace injuries, with slip-and-fall accidents among the most common.

To some, this sounds like something that will never happen to them. They have no reason to believe that they will ever slip and fall on the job.

Others, however, have come to find that this is a risk that they need to be aware of at all times.

While a slip-and-fall accident can happen to almost anyone, these are more common in industries like construction and manufacturing.

Here are some of the most common causes of slip-and-fall accidents:

  • Slick floors, often due to a recent cleaning or a spill
  • Failure to use barriers to prevent workers from accessing a potentially hazardous floor
  • Applying too much wax or polish
  • Treating stairs or sloping floors with wax or polish
  • Failure to use nonskid floor treatments where necessary
  • Bulging or torn carpet
  • Rugs with curling edges
  • Items that are stuck in the floor, such as debris embedded in carpet
  • Missing or broken handrail
  • Missing or broken steps
  • Debris on the stairs

These are not the only situations that can lead to a slip-and-fall accident, but they are among the most common. The bad thing about these is that you may not see trouble coming. For example, without any warning signs, it’s hard to know if a floor is wet.

A slip-and-fall accident can cause a variety of injuries, including but not limited to a concussion, broken bones, abrasions and torn ligaments.

If you are part of a slip-and-fall accident at work, you should call for immediate help. You don’t want to assume you can treat your injuries at home, especially if you are experiencing pain and discomfort.

Once you receive treatment, you can then turn your attention to the cause of the accident and your legal rights. If your medical team suggests that you take time away from work, you’ll need to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits. The money you receive can help you financially as you recover.
